LAKE NACIMIENTO, San Luis Obispo County — October 28, 2026. Before putting a boat on Lake Nacimiento, residents and visitors need to understand a mandatory environmental-protection rule: vessels must pass an invasive-mussel screening before launching and carry a valid Vessel Screening Permit on the water. The San Luis Obispo County Public Works Department administers the prevention program with partner agencies and operators.
Why does the lake require boat inspections?
Quagga, zebra and other invasive freshwater mussels can attach to hulls, propellers and boat equipment or travel in standing water inside a vessel. If introduced to a reservoir, these organisms can damage ecosystems, water intakes and equipment. The county’s program seeks to keep invasive mussels from being transported between waterways.
What does a boat owner need to do?
The county instructs boaters to clean, drain and dry their vessels before launching. Inspect exposed surfaces, remove plants or animals, empty live wells and ballast tanks, drain lower outboard units, clean gear and keep the boat free from standing water. A vessel that has been on an infested waterbody within the previous 30 days cannot launch at Lake Nacimiento or Lake San Antonio under the county’s stated standards. Boaters should not assume that a receipt for previous decontamination overrides the local screening rules.
Do the rules apply to private ramps?
Yes, relevant screening requirements apply to watercraft using Lake Nacimiento, including boats launched from eligible community or private ramps. The county maintains a Resident Vessel Program for qualified watercraft kept at the lake, with procedures coordinated through participating local private-ramp associations and certified screeners. An account or residence near the lake does not automatically exempt a vessel from all applicable requirements.
Where is the public launch?
California State Parks’ boating-facility database lists a public boat-launch facility and marina at 10625 Nacimiento Lake Drive near Bradley. It identifies the lake as situated in San Luis Obispo County but the public park facility as operating under Monterey County Parks jurisdiction. Official listings also distinguish the resort marina from the boat-launch facility; services and current operating hours should be confirmed with the operator.
Can visitors reserve camping?
Monterey County’s official Lake Nacimiento recreation page says camping is available through reservations and, where permitted, first-come arrangements. It also describes boating, fishing and water sports. That general listing does not guarantee availability on a specific date or current water depth at the launch ramp; check levels, access and fees before a trip.
